A “calculating hoy,” a resident of Hokitika, says the Lyttelton “Times”, is attracting attention on the AVest Coast by his marvellous feats of lightning mental arithcmetic. He is about twenty-three years of age. He takes delight in working out sums given him by other residents and by visitors. His abilty and quickness were tested by members of t/ho party ol politicians and of the Canterbury Progress League who were in Hokitika on Thursday. He was asked to multiply a sum of five figures by another sum of five figures. He repeated the fi < ’ rr ' , " s once, turned them over in his mind for a few seconds and gave the answer, which was proved by pen and pencil to he correct. A visitor told him the date on,-which the vistor was married—it was a fairly long time ago. and he immediately stated the day of the week. He has a remarkable memory for the dates of public events. He wrs asked when All Alas--py became Prime Afini te.r. Ho gave a date, which it was. found was not the date on which ho was sworn in but tlic date on which the want of confidence motion lie moved was carried. The slight mistake was on account of the calculator mistaking the meaning of the question.
