SUGAR MARKET

Saturday’s. Christchurch “Press” says this week has been the worst time known for many retailers as regards sugar supplies. The Koromiko arrived m Lyttelton on Friday, February 11th, and after a lapse of a Week quite a number of storekeepers in the country were without their allotment out of this steamer. This is due to the very slow discharge. It is reported that the Koromiko was lying idle last Tuesday, because her two unloading gangs had been taken off to go and work on the To Anau. This latter boat bad no sugar on board for Lyttelton; yet, for some reason, the powers that bo appear to have given preference to this ship, while the public waited for the sugar off the Koromiko. The next sugar boat from Auckland is the Kanna, which is reported as due in Lyttelton oil Tuesday. She is supposed to have dn board one month’s , supply for the grocery trade. Experience lias taught the sugar distributors never to guarantee any quantity as being on board ship afloat, as far too often the papers (which usually arrive a day before the steamer) when opened, convey the depressing information that what is expected by way of quantity lias not been shipped. Cases are known where merchants have only received one-quarter of the quantity expected, much to their disapopintment.
