The visitors proceeded by the main coast road. Representatives of local bodies endeavoured to impress the importance of the completion of about 30 miles of metalling to enable motor traffic to be maintained beyond the summer months. The party luneheoned at Tolaga Bay and proceeded to the Hon. A. T. Ngata’s residence at Waiiomatini tio-night. They subsequ-. I The (Parliamentary tourists left at , nine o’clock this morning for a three days’ tour of the East Coast. Sir James Carroll joined the party prior to its departure from Gisborne, lho visitors arrived at Tolaga Bay at noon. They were welcomed ;hv the residents at luncheon. Mr Boland (chairman of the Lawn County Council), after a cordial welcome. said the Uawa county was only a now county. It had been formed in 1919, but they had raised over £IOO,000 for roads and bridges of which £58,000 was for main roads. Next session they intended to ask Parliament to sanction proposals for a harbour costing £70,000. He hoped the visitors would support their member in every reasonable claim.

Mr K. S. Williams, Member for the district, said Tolaga Bay would he hotter served I>\- securing a good road from Gisborne instead of pressing for a railway. He did not agree that because a district was sparsely settled it should he neglected by the Government. If the Government gave the district facilities, it soon would attract population. Mr Masters (Stratford) replied on behalf of the visitors, and paid a tribute to the residents for their enterprise. I.ater the visitors left for Rutoron, arriving at seven p.m. CHARGE OF BOOKMAKING. AUCKLAND, February 10. A charge of having carried on the business or occupation of bookmaking on January 22nd was made against John Weston (Mr Hogben), who was tried before Mr Justice Stringer and a jury at the SupremeCoiirt. He was finally acquitted.
