The death took place at Christchurch on Saturday, of Mr K. W. Cooke, for many years -Public Trusted’ in Greymouth, The late Mr Cooke has been ailing for some time, and for the past few months had resided in Christchurch.

In connection with the coming football season, and the proposal .to form a stiß-Union in Westland, a meeting of delegates of the Southern Division will be held on Tuesday March Ist. at 8 p.ni., when delegates from all clubs proposing to take part in the season’s fixtures should he present.

We regret to record the death of an old pioneer miner of the West Coast, in the person of Mr Patrick Feeney, formerly of Blue Spur and latterly of Hokitika. The deceased was a native of Gargh, County Antrim, Ireland, and 80 years of age. He was a widower, having been married in Melbourne, arid followed most of the mining rushes in Australia and New Zealand, ‘ultimately settling down at Blue Spur where ho lived for many years. His wife predeceased him some three years ago. He leaves a family of five, three sons 'Patrick at Hamilton, John and Denis at Blue Spur), and two daughters (Mrs Gray of Auckland, and Mrs Neil Warren of Hokitika). Many old friends will regret the passing of another of the old stamp of pioneers, and will extend sincere sympathy to the bereaved relatives.

An action to recover £4O ss. damages for injuries alleged to have been suffered as the result of a- bite by a dog was heard by Mr J. W. Boynton, SAL, in the Magistrate's Court at, Auckland on Tuesday. The plaintiff was Mrs F. E. G;dlot and the defendant Joseph Moodabe grover, Grey street. The amount was made up of £5 5s medical expenses and £35 general damages. Plaintiff stated that when she entered defendant’s shop a cattle,dog, which she alleged was owned by defendant sprang at her causing severe injury to her right arm. Defendant admitted owning a dog of the description given by plaintiff, hut contended that it not his dog that attacked plaintiff. The Magistrate gave judgment for plaintiff for £5 ss. damages and £lO general damages with costs.
