ACCIDENT AT BLACKBALL
A distressing accident occurred at the Blackball mine yesterday, the. victim being a well-known member of the Miners’ Union named Edward Hockley. As far as can be ascertained it seems that Lockley was trucking from the face and was braking two trucks down the jig. The front truck was uncoupled. and T,c*ek(loy immediately hurried ahead to eouple the trucks together. The foremost one had gained impetus and he endeavoured to stop its flight. In doing so rear truck, continued on down tlie jig, overtaking Lockley and crushing him in the front. He fell to the ground and was dragged some distance. He sustained very severe injuries to his face and body, llis worst iniury was resultant.,from being dragged by the truck and coming in contact with the edge of a Hat sheet, j p) r IJttle was immediately called in and attended to the unfortunate man. who was. suffering greatly trom his injuries and consequent, shock. On arrival at the Grey Hospital it was* found that Lockley hgd bis collar bone broken, while the flesh was tjorn from his logs. Inquiries jmade last evening elicited the information that Lockley was in a serious condition.
