\ LANDLORD, A TENANT, AND A HAMMER. PALMERSTON N., I-Vl>. 15. A dispute between landlord and tenant caused a good deal ot excitement in the Magistrate’s Court. Palmerston North, on Monday. The evidence of Pereival A. Humphries (the tenant) was to the effect that Charles H. Walker (the landlord) complained to him that his wife had pointed out to a prospective buyer the iaults ol the .house. Walker had galled witness a cad, a crawler, > and a trespasser, and witness had responded in similar terms. Walker made a bull-dog rush at witness • and there was a rough and tumble. 1 Charles Walker, in filing evidence, ' said he had asked .witness to desist from talking to prospective purchasers. Humphries “turned nasty” and said be would smash witness with the hammer he was carrying. This was “-more than a Scotchman could stand,” and witness tried to get the hammer from Humphries. In the struggle which ensued both fell down. Mr J. L. Stout, S.M., held that Walker struck the first Wow, and that lie would -have to leave his tenants alone ’ until the court granted an order. Walker was convicted and lined CIO. A counter charge of lmving assaulted Walker with a hammer was entered against Humphries, but was dismissed.
