Vickers yards at Barrow expect to launch the first Commonwealth liner in April. The Beardsmore yard at Glasgow is launching another about June. (BRITISH UNEMPLOYMENT. LONDON, February 16. In the Commons Hon. MacNnmara stated that although it was necesSary to alleviate hardships arising from unemployment, Government also had a far-reaching duty to re-establish British industry and thus bring about a ;per,man'etnt prosperity. The Government’s policy had been to se e relief work was useful. A productive scheme costing 10,f millions in connection with roads was now giving employment to thirtyfive thousand extra men. Th« ' Ministrv of Health's scheme in connection with laying out building sites at a cost of five million was employing others. Altogether their productive schemes were finding employment for thousand. On referring to the amendment of the unemployment 'act, Mr MacNnmara said the contribution would he raised from ten pence to 1/13, employers and employed paying an extra penny and Government the balance.
