News Inis been received of the death at Wellington of Air Thomas Vincent Byrne, a former well-known resident of this district. The deceased was born in Stafford about 50 years ago and practised as a solicitor at Kumara and Hokitika for a twimlx-r of years. He was a member of the Westland County Council for several years and County Chairman for a term. He was also a member of the Kumnra Borough Council and Mayor of that town for several years and member of tly Westland Charitable Aid Board, Kumnra School Committee and' other local bodies. Some years ago he removed to Wellington where ho has since resided. He leaves a widow and two daughters (one being Mrs (1. Chapman of Ross).

Mr P. 11. Stewart, the popular manager of the National Bank at Hokitika has received notice of transfer to Hamilton, North Island, to take charge of the branch there. While congratulating Air Stewart on'his promotion in the service of the Bank, the news will be received with regret bv a wide circle of friends in the town and district. During his stay here Air Stewart has proved himself an excellent citizen. Together with "Airs Stewart he has taken an active interest in public matters, especially during the war period, giving a helping hand to anything that meant the public good, and the advancement ot the district generally. In connection with the beautification of Mncnndrew Square. Air Stewart’s work has spoken for itself, the enhanced appearance of this reserve from a wilderness to»the beauty spot it has been for several years past, showing the labour of love he put 'into the work with such splendid results. As a member (4 the Chamber of Commerce and Progress League, Mr Stewart has taken an active interest, while the Hokitika Bowling Club will lose a valuable mem bet, who was singles champion one year and at present is Vice President. He has also Liken an active interest in the management of St. Andrew’s Church. Both Air and Airs Stewart have proved excellent citzens, and have won many friendships in this district, and their approaching departure will c ause many expressions of real regret. Air Slewart is to report at Hamilton as soon as possible and will lie leaving in the course of a week or so. His successor at Hokitika has not yet been notified.
