OBITUARY
MR ALEXANDER MEH Alt R V
Enjoying the esteem of all who know him as a man of sterling character, and well known throughout the Westland district, where lie resided for a number of years—Mr Alexander Meharry passed away at Christchurch on the 7th inst. The lato Mr Meharry was born in Belfast, Ireland in 1858. He came out to New Zealand in 1874, and for a time followed up gold-mining on the West Coast. Later he took up some 671 acres of land here and carried on farming operations' for a. time. On selling out lie acquired some thousand acres of timber land, on a portion of which he erected n large sawmilling plant, and engaged in the export of timber, and afterwards sold the business to Messrs Benjamin and Mulcock of Christchurch. He then joined the Government Lands Department and, was appointed Chief Crown Lands Ranger for Westland. After thirteen years, of service in the Government Lands Department, he resigned and took over a business in Christchurch, which he conducted for a few years, and then sold out ,taking up COO acres of land in the Rakaia district. The lato Mr Meliarry was well known and respected in racing circles on the West Coast. At the time of his death he resided in Lichfield Street, Christchurch. He leaves a wife, three daughters and three sons to mourn his loss, and the sympathy of a large circle of friends on the West Coast and elsewhere is sincerely extended to them in their bereavement.
