TUESDAY, FEBUARY, ‘lsth. The monthly meeting o| the League Branch was held at the County Chambers at 7.40 p.m. Present; Messrs R. Wild (Chairman), AY. J. Butler, )\. Logtte, T. Carley, J. R. Ritchie, P. It. Stewart, 1). J. Evans, T. \Y. Bruce and A. G. Pilkington. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. The. outward correspondence was road and approved. INWARD CORRESPONPENCE. From Trades Protection Society, regarding the question of the weekly halfloilday. Received. Arising out of'this correspondence, Mi Logue moved that it was not advisable to have a universal half-holiday throughout, the Dominion as the conditions of the various districts differed so greatly, and it was more equitable to allow each district to determine its own holiday in keeping with local conditions. Mr Butler seconded. Mr Bruce supported a universal halt-holiday on Saturd:i> and moved to leeommend the Government accordingly. Air Carley seconded the amendment proposed by Mr Bruce. A general discussion pro apd eon took place. Ihe amendment was lost and the motion carried by . votes to 2.
The question of the visit oi the Prime Minister was mentioned, and it was resolved the Chairman join the party in meeting the Ministerial party at Otira, and tender a special welcome to the visiting officers of the Canterbury Procress League It was suggested also that the officers fie invited to visit l ake Kaitieri on Thursday forenoon. In the course of discussion it was suggested that the League support the representations to be made by t.ie sa"millers for siding accommodation at Hokitika, and to the representations suggesting that some relief should be r iven’to the individual gold miner who was unable to soil gold at an enhanced I rice during the war period. These matters were in the Premier's Departments.
The matter of urging the introduction of hydro-electricity for power purposes was also 'mentioned.
It was resolved the members of the League meet Messrs Henderson and ( limit* to-night at the close of the Prime Minister’s reception at the down Hall. . Matters of southern bridges were discussed and left to the Chairman to attend to. Tourist traffic to Lake Kaniori and Wailio Gorge were mentioned as being abnormal this year. It was stated that visitors to the two localities were charmed with both resorts. The meeting concluded at 9.10 p.m.
