Needham was charged with the murder of his son, William Needam, aged 17, on January Gth. The tragedy occurred at a farm at Marohemo, the son having bis head terribly injured by violent blows. The defence was that accused was insane at the time of "the crime. After a retirement of nearly two hours the jury returned a verdict of guilty of manslaughter, with a recommendation to mercy, on account of accused’s' age and temperament. Sentence was deferred.
