Two men had an exciting experience whilst fishing off the reef at Purnkanui (says the “Otago Daily Times”). A large fish suddenly snapped at a groper hook baited with a cod head. The fish struggled gamely, and on coming to the surface was discovered to be a large shark. After about an hour’s struggle, in which Iwith men were completely exhausted, they succeeded in landing it. It proved to boa whip-tail shark, and measured 7ft. in length. A small fish, which came out of his mouth after lie was landed was sent to Dunedin for identification. It was about 4 inches in length and its head resembled that of a shark. Six small sharks were stranded on Long Beach at high-water mark one day last week.
