EVADING THE POLICE. REMARKABLE ESCAPADE OF A BOY. In the Police Court at Waibi a youth named Herbert Sunderland Fielding, a resident of Waihi, was charged with having stolen a bicycle valued at CIO, the property of Charles ,T. Trncev. Senior-Sergeant O’Grady stated that other charges were pending, and asked for a remand of eight days. Accused was remanded in custody. The story of his escapade is somewhat remarkable. Accused bad been licensed out to M r Charles \\ amuck, tanner, of liai Valley, Blenheim, from the Nelson Training Farm, hut ran away on Christmas Eve, and came to Waibi. It is alleged that lie '‘commandeered” a bicycle in January, also some personal effects, and was arrested at Wniteknuri when in possession ot a stolen machine. When be was being escorted by Constable Jackson to Wailii the youth suddenly spurted, and a race ensued between the captor and captured ; the latter won, and made good bis escape. He was next heard oi near Mataura, but eventually reached Tauranga. He then doubled back towards Kntikati. Meanwhile the postal officer at Aongatete bad been asked to keep a look-out for the youth, who duly arrived there. Hp made an attempt to get away, but a thrust of a walking stick between the spokes of bis machine caused a momentary stoppage, lie then fled on foot, chased by Constable Dunn. But again lie won the, sprint, and got away. He proceeded' to Tauranga on foot, and there lie was arrested and brought on to Waibi m the custody of Senior-Sergeant O’Grady.
