In the Seddonville-Mokiliinui district the State ran to death a coal mine (says the “Westport News”). It said it could not pay and closed up the mine. In the same district co-operative minors are now working and are making great money, reported to be in some of the mines £5 to £7 per day. Pays are alleged to run into £IOO to £l2O per month per man. Tt is stated that a tenth share in one of the mines is changing hands at something like £I2OO. The miners arc making this big money and selling the coal at the ruling prices. Advocates of State mining have in the Mokihinui state failure and private enterpriee success, something to ponder over.

An inquest was held at the Westland Hospital yesterday afternoon touching the death of H. S. McCalitim, reported in yesterday’s issue. The District Coronei, Air i>. J. Evans presided, and Sergt King conducted the inquiry on behalf of the police. Evidence was given by the members of the hospital staff generally on the lines of facts published already. A verdict was returned in accordance with the medical testimony, death being due to comato asphyxia. The deceased who was not in want, was well spoken of for his industry and faithful work wherever employed. His age was 36 years. He was a single man.

The Westland County Council is making a commencement with the widening of the Kanieri Lake road. Lately the hill at Morris’ Kanieri township, was considerably improved, and the junction with the Kokatahi road widened. The first section of widening is a small stretch of road in the vicinity of Crawfish creek bridge, where the road will be improved and the hill road widened. Further on an additional section will be taken in band very soon, and the work will be continued as funds and labor are available. All the bridges on the road are also to have a complete overhaul, and be strengthened. During the year a considerable sum of money will be expended in improving the popular thoroughfare through to the lake! The attention will be much appreciated by the travelling public generally. Four sawmills are to set in along tlie route on cutting operations, and two of these will soon lui in operation.

The Chief Postmaster advises that the ferry steamer did not correct with the overland journey this morning.

The Wallsend Mine is to be unwatered in a few days’ time, a boiler and pump for the purpose having been procured from the State Mine. The Wakaiti is expected to sail for Jackson Bay to-morrow evening, taking a party to view the possibilities of the •district for a timber export trade. If satisfied with the conditions and prospects, a large expenditure' of outside capital is contemplated to provide a shipping jetty, laying a tarmway and establishing a small township in connection with the milling operations.

The increasing demands for transport facilities in this district is emphasised by the fact that within the last couple of weeks ,two large Leyland motor lorries have been landed here to add to the local fleet, of lorries engaged in the timber transport trade. A lorry of the make just referred to is now being operated by Orr Bros., who are transporting the timber product from tne Gillam’s Gully sawmill to the skid-sid-ing at Arahura. Another large lorry of the same make, lias just been landed* here for the order of Haekell and Coy., sawmillcrs at Coal Creek, Kanieri Lake’ road, and the machine will be utilised chiefly in the transport of timber from the sawmill to the railway loading siding at the Hokitika wharf. Other importations of motor lorries are spoken of for various parts of the district to assist in the transport of timber and other commodities from and to different points.
