WELFARE LEAGUE HECKLED

WANGANUI, February 3

A public meeting was held to-night when the aims and of the Welfare League were explained by Mr D. McLaren. There was an attendance of about 60, but there was organised opposition and the speaker was severely heckled. At the close of the meeting the speaker was tendered a vote of thanks. One motion was carried to the effect: “That after hearing the address; this meeting of citizens of Wanganui are of opinion that it is not in the best interests of the community that local' Branch should be formed. ’

The Attorney-Generali stated there appears to be some misapprehension is to the position of Mr Frazer, who has been appointed a Judge of the Arbitration Court. Some paragraphs appeared suggesting that the Government lias imposed conditions in the case of the present Judge, rendering the position la* holds in some respects inferior to the position of his predecessor;. Thi 1 ’ is not the case. The Government had neither power nor desire to impose any such conditions. His Honor, Mr Jus tide Frazer, had all the rank, privi leges, and immunities of a Judge of ti e Supreme Court.

Mack (General Secretary of Amal qimated Society of Railway Servants) has stated that he had received no direct intimation as. yet that this resolution has been passed. The whole question ,however, from the point of view, not only of the Federation, hut also that of the Amalgamation of those railway Societies, would he fully discussed it the Triennial Conference of the. A.S R.S., to lie held next, week, hut there vas no doubt that the rank and lile of .he railway servants, so far as he was aware, was in favour of amalgamation which up to the present, had been dei lined by the locomotive men's association which, u [i to the present had been declined, and had never been seriously discussed by the Officers’ Institute. NAUTICAL ENQUIRY. AUCKLAND, Feb. 2. The Collector of Custom's produced written evidence l»v Robert. D. Head, merchant at Niue, to the effect that a short fierce hurricane was experienced there on September 4. Th wind destroyed a ntimhpr of cocoanut trees and caused waterspouts off the coast. The Court returned a finding that the Inbilee was Inst at sen in a eye lone that suddenly arose in the vicinity of Niue in September 4. The vessel was seaworthy, fully equipped and manned, and properly loaded. Those lost were: Passengers—F. Head (merchant), Evans Haler and wife and three natives, all residents of Niue; crew—\Y. H. Champion (master), M. Fisher (first unite), A. Dudtield (second mate), R. L. Fowler (engineer), and six islanders.

Mrs Bekker’s Gale won the ladies’ hunters, with J. J. Bryce’s Twilight second. The open hunters was won by J. Brice’s Hailstorm, wjtii Twilight second.
