The farewll social and da net 1 tendered to Miss Linklater on Wednesday evening was a grand success in every way, and the attendance was much larger than anticipated, as many as sixteen couples being on the floor at one time. Although the night was hot for dancing, dance followed dance in quick succession.
At the request of the Committee, Mr Handle made a presentation of a silver manicure set; a lovely necklet and a box of beautifully embroidered handkerchiefs to Miss Linklater. In doing so lie was desired to thank her sincerely for her untiring assistance in all past socials, etc., and to wish her health and happiness and prosperity in the future, .Miss Linklater feelingly responded, thanking her friends for the beautiful presents and their kind wishes; assuring them that she would never forget them, and hoped they would also have good health and all other good things. Mr George Linklater also responded on behalf of himself and other .members of the family for the honour conferred on his sister that evening.
A bounteous supply of refreshments were then handed round (including tea with that scarce commodity, sugar), and were much appreciated by the*'large assemblage present. ! The music for the dance tv ns supplied by Mrs Stewart, piano, and Mr I*. | Martini, cornet, extras being played by Misses Brown and Morgan, and Mr Butcher. Mr R. Roberts efficiently acted as M.C. ! A pleasing item of the evening was the dancing of an Irish jig by Miss Hannan of Greymouth.
In thanking the musi'ians, the M.C. Mr Blackinun for the loan of his piano and the use of his kitchen and all aho had assisted in getting up this social. Mi Handle desired especially thank Mrs .J. Stewart, and Mr W. .1. Benyon. of Tvumarn for a sufficient supply of sugar for the tea, thus relieving the ladies of the committee from n source of much anxiety. I understand that Miss Linklater "ill 1„. leaving the district for the North Island within a fortnight’s time.
