Tfie body of Alfred Hutchinson, whose clothes were /ound on the Manawatu river bank at Paiko last Monday was discovered on Friday. At the inquest a verdict of found drowned was returned. The deceased was single, “middle aged and u flaxmill employee. A DROWNING CASUALTY. I AUCKLAND, This Day. Edward Francis Keney, a tailor, aged 37, a resident of Otaliuhu, was drowned in Tataki river by the capsizing of a sailing boat. Deceased and five other occupants were thrown into the water. Two men supported three ladies until rescued by a boat from tbe shore. BODY FOUND. AUCKLAND, This Day. The dead body found in the harbour was identified as Samuel Voontan, a gardener, aged seventy.
A BAD FRACTURE. WELLINGTON, This Day. j Robert F. Semple, aged 21, son of the I t , x -M.P., for Wellington South, sustained a compound fracture of the light leg on Saturday through the over-turning of a rock-laden truck at the Orongorongo i water-works. He is progressing favourably. ! AIR-SKRVICEi started. I TIMARU, January 31. A trial aerial Timnru-Christchureh mail service was inaugurated to-day. The Avro plane accomplished the journey in 1 hour 40 minutes, arriving at 9.40, stopping at Ashburton to drop and pick up a hag. An altitude of 500 to IQOO feet was maintained. Tliei'c was a strong head wind and clear weather after Ashburton. Over 200 letters and bundles of newspapers were carried. The plane returned at noon. i THE I/OST omaka. * BLENHEIM, January 3lst The Omaka was an auxiliary steamer the engine being a 45 h.p. oil machine. It was a wooden vessel, built at Auckland in 1886. Its dimensions were, length 78ft.. beam 20.6; depth 6.2 and 64 tons gross. It was bought bv Eckford Bros in May last and was used previously in the New Zealand trade under the name of May Howard. It left on the ill-fated trip from Blenheim at four o'clock on Saturday afternoon and crossed Wairau bar at 9 p.m. The cargo comprised peas , and chaff. A ’ wivv southerly gale was blowing. The i
insurances are not available. CHARGED WITH EMBEZZLEMENT. CAMARU, Jan. 31. A warrant lias been issued for the arrest of T. L. Ralfe, late Secretary of the North Otago Soldiers’ Aid Association. He- is charged with embezzlement. Though the amount mentioned in the warrant is small, it is stated that <* ton siderahle sum is involved. NO TRACE. MASTERTON, Jan 31. No trace Ims yet been found of the men blown out to sea from Castopoint. YOUNG WOMAN DROWNED. H AAV ERA, This Day. Violet Honeyiield single, about 26, while bathing with a young man named Brooks, in a pool in Waingongoro river yesterday afternoon got into difficulties. Brooks made every effort, to get the lady out,, hut his efforts were resultless. ( hoy named Harris who had previously .roue to the pool to tell the two swimmers that the place was dangerous, went to call assistance. Soon several good swimmers were on the scene.. The water was very deep and it was three quarters of an hour before the body was recovered. Efforts at resuscitation were continued for over an hour and were
unsuccessful. Deceased came from New Plymouth. FOUND HANGING. NELSON, January 31. The body of a man, presumably diat of Thomas Barrow was found hanging from a tree in Trafalgar Square yesterday. Deceased was rescued from the harbour on 20th. January, when Instated be had Walked over the whail in the darkness. After treatment at the hospital, he was discharged last Saturday and was found as stated yesterday. A bank pass bonk and relcrencc contained the name of Thomas Barrow but the Coroner said no evi deuce*showed deceased was Thomas Harrow. A photograph found on the deceased was that of the dead man. and the coroner ordered the photograph to be sent to deceased’s wife in Wellington for identification. The inquest was adjourned.
