WAITAUA SETTLERS’ MEETING

A meeting of )) nitaha Settlers was held at the Factory on last Saturday morning, to discuss local matters and certain correspondence from the County Council. Mr J. IT. Cropped presided, and referred to the most pressings needs that required attention. First in importance was the widening of the Upper \\ nitaha road. This work he stressed, as the con dition of the road at present was far from satisfactory and unsafe for, light traffic owing to the large ruts. The settlers were paying rates on their proper-

iicin |'<v r> 1 ' * ties for many years hut their one and only main road was in a discreditable state. There was also the question of putting in water tables at several stages of the road. In heavy rain portions of the road were feet under water. The following settlers took part on the discussion on local requirements, some of the sentiments expressed being fairly to the point. Messrs H. Reynolds J. Davidson, H. McGowan, AY. Anderson and IT. Linklater. Tt <Pa*s ultimately decided to confine their efforts to the undermentioned matters and resolutions were carried in support of same as follows. (1) —Widening oT road. It was proposed by Mr R. Reynolds, seconded by Mr H. McGowan that the County Council \lc asked to immediately take in hand the widening of a. section of the road from the Dairy Factory to Doakin’s (about one mile). (2) —Water tallies. Proposed by Mr Jas Davidson, seconded by Mr Linklater that the Council to be asked to carry these out, simultaneously with No 1 above. The putting in of these tables was considered a small matter, if done with the widening of the road. (3) Shelter shed at Deviation. Mr W. Anderson proposed that the Council he again written to and asked to supplement their offer for the erection of shelter shed, by finding the money required for the same, the settlers to find the piles and labour. Mr Reynolds to send to the Council by next meeting a plan of tho shed and estimated cost of such work. Seconded by Mr Cropper and unanimously carried. It was decided to ask Councillor Jeffries who was present at the meeting to bring the above matters before the next County meeting.
