Major Holmes, and a party of his auxiliaries, when proceeding .in two motor lorries, were ambushed near Castle Island, Kerry, bj 40 rebels. The latter opened fire from behind fences on Ifbth sides of the roadway. Major Holmes was seriously wounded. One
police constable was shot dead. A Dublin Castle statement says:—. "Sixty raiders at Castle Island, who used two machine guns, disarmed the auxiliaries and took their cars.” SHOOTINGS BY MILITARY. LONDON, January 29. Armed men entered the Wicklow Hotel in Dublin, and fatally shot William Doran, a porter. A force of soldiers surprised some ambushers at Coachford, Cork. They killed one, and captured 10. Of the latter, five were wounded. Air 'Thomas Blake, a chemist of Limerick, was fatally shot in the street near his home. A FARM CLAIMANT. LONDON, January 28. An American lady, who returned to Ireland to claim a farm at Ferinov has been kidnapped from a motor-car near Fermoy by some masked men. IRISH M.P. RESIGNS LONDON, January 28. Mr iSweetman. a member of the House of Commons for North Wexford has resigned, owing to his having a differnce with the Fail Eireann, Mr Sweetman advocates an immediate peace in Ireland.
