SHOPS AND OFFICES ACTS
The District Inspector of Factories for Westland desires to draw the attention of all occupiers of shops and shop assistants employed therein, to the amendments made daring the last session of Parliament in the Shops and Offices Act, 1908, l»v which the number of hours that may be worked by Shop Assistants is reduced from fifty-two to forty-eight hours in any one week. The provision relating to payment for any extended hours that may be worked by assistants for the purpose, of stocktaking or other special worv (not being the actual sale of goods) is also amended by providing “that in addition to any payment for overtime (which is payable at half as much again as the ordinary rates) there shall be paid an allowance of one shilling and sixpence for a meal on every day on which lie is imployed during such extended hours.” Written notices of any extended time so worked shall be given to the Inspector within twenty-four hours thereafter. No extended hours can be worked on any half-holiday. The obligations of the shop assistants under the Act is increased, in that he in common with his employer is held responsible, as “every assistant who is employed in a breach of the provisions of the Principal Act commits an offence against that Act and is liable to a fine of five pounds for each offence.” The attention of all occupiers of shops is drawn to an amendment made last Session to Section 2d of the Shops and Offices Act 1908 which provides that “It shall not he lawful for the occupier of any shop (including an hotel or restaurant) to sell or deliver any goods, the sale of which is comprised in the principal business of any other shops while the last mentioned shop is required to he plowed pursuant to a requisition under this section. Provided that the occupier of an hotel or restaurant may at any time sell tobacco, cigars or cigarettes to lodgers in the hotel or restaurant.
