The Stipendiary Magistrate had a long sitting yesterday lasting from 10.30 a.in. until (>.4;> p.m. The long list of business was of a mixed nature, as a glance at our report will show. The Court was well filled with auditors throughout the hearing.
During the course of the hearing of a charge at the Magistrate’s Court yesterday afternoon, Mr Murdoch expressed doubt as to a statement made by Sergt McCarthy as fo the evidence given by a former witness. His Worship upheld the Sergeant’s contention as to the statement, and this led Mr Murdoch to state that he did not hear it, and that as a rule he did not miss much. Sergt McCarthy rejoined that lie was quite awaro that Mr Murdoch did not miss much and was surprised at this instance occurring, adding that if ho had not been against his client ho may have heard it better.
A concert and dance will ho held in the Public Hall, Eokatahi, on Friday, February 4th, in aid of the Westland Memorial fund. An invitation has been extended by the Government to Lord Haig to visit New Zealand at the conclusion of the ex-soldiers’ conference in South Africa. Owing to the fact that the binns are full to overflowing—they are now holding (500 tons of .coal, which cannot he got away because the railway bridge is closed against traffic—the Brunner coal mine was compelled to close down on Wednesday evening.

Yesterday’s Christchurch “Press” says:—The police arc still searching for Richard Hitchen, who is wanted in connexion with an alleged assault at Addington on Monday on Raymond Brownley Tapley, who lies in the Christchurch Hospital suffering from a wound in the throat inflicted by a razor. TapIcy is making satisfactory progress towards recovery.
The results of experiments of papermaking from pulp manufactured from New Zealand forest trees were mentioned by the Mayor in the course of his speech of welcome to M. Henri Segaert, Consul-General for Belgium, at the civic reception at'Christchurch on Wednesday. Dr Thacker said that before the war New Zealand timbers were tested as to their suitability for producing wood pulp for the manufacture of paper, and at present there was in Christchurch half a ton of paper made from those timbers. The Mayor added that this paper was equal to any manufactured from wood pulp in any country.
In connection with the prosecutions at the Magistrate’s Court yesterday under the Stamp Act a majority of the defendants did not put in an appearance. It was stated that it was necessary to prove that the signatures to the vouchers were those of the defendants. Sergt McCarthy .stated that in order to avoid expense to the defendants he had not subpoened them, recognising it would cause considerable hardship, but if they were not forthcoming at the next sitting this would have to he done, unless they wrote acknowledging that the signatures on the vouchers were their own. /This would do away with the necessity of attendance if they did not wish to appear.
An unusual exhibit was placed before the Minister of Public Works by residents of Amuri County on Wednesday in support of their claim for speedier bridge construction. The exhibit was a large mail service motor-car that had been severely buffeted in an attempt to cross the flooded Mason River on Tuesday. Water swirled over the seats of the car, damaged a quantify of parcel mail, and eventually forced the driver to abandon his seat. As a result the machine had to he towed into Waiau next morning. The Minister was evidently impressed hv the facts placed before him, because he subsequently promised that two bridge works would be treated, not only as essential, hut as urgent matters.
At Addington stock sales on Wednesday there was a slightly better demand for bacon pigs, the entry being on the small side, and prices were round about Id per lb better. Pork was about the same as at the previous sale. Values were:—'Choppers £5 to 68 10s, light baconors 64 to J 64 l.os, heavy baconers ;65 to 65 15s, extra heavy baconers to 6(5 Bs. Average price per lh 7d to 7jd. Light porkers £‘2 15s to 63 ss, heavy porkers £3 10s to .63 15s, average price per lh fid to 9|d. There was a poor sale of store pigs, of which there was a medium entry. Values were:—Good stores £3 to 63 15s, medium stores 62 5s to 62 15s, small stores 23s to 355, weaners 16s (id to 225, sows in pig 63 16s to £5.
