committee for alleged libel, which is still pending. For some months past Ryan lias been i engaged in financial operations on a large scale, including the floating of several industrial companies. It is the decline of those securities which has brought about the action ( ,f Mew York banks. Ryan s liabilities, it is stated, run into several millions of pounds, eliietlv from bank loans. It is also stated that he has assets sufficient to cover his obligations. LIRE PLOT i.\ LONDON. LONDON, Nov 30. A gang of armed ipcp were op Saturday night discovered by tins police in Red Lion Market, \\ hitecross-strewt, I'inshury E.C. outside tlit* premises of Ingram, IVrkins and Co,, one of the bigest timber warehouses in London. One man was arrested. About 10.30 p.m. a police-constable in j Red Lion Market noticed a man loitering in the corner o ftlie square. At first he tok no notice, hut hearing a noise ; from behind some empty vans in an- ] other corner of the market square, he j became conspicuous and challenged the , man lie had first seen. The man im- < ; mediately attacked the constable and . called for help. Five men carrying automatic revolvers emerged from behind the vans and rushed at the policeman, who was compelled to release his hold of his first | assailant. All the six men then i ran through a narrow court leading ■ to Wbitoeross-street and llarbienn. j The policeman found behind tip* vans lour bottles of petrol and cotton wool, ■ and also two new automatic revolvers and l(X) rounds of ammunition. Some cotton wool soaked in petrol bad been pushed through mi aperture in one of j the gates of the timber yard and two tapers were lying on the ground close ; by. ' An liour later a man entered the square front Golden-lane. Ho was challenged by a policeman but refused to answer and made a, rush for an alley leading from the square. Several policemen gave chase, blowing their whistles. The man, keeping well ahead of his pursuers ran into Barbican and through a narrow street into Cripplegate, where he was stopped by a policeman on point duty outside Cripplegate Institute. The man arrested was stated to have flashed a torch-light when challenged by the police. Another revolver was found by the polico in Lamb’s passage a court off Whitecross-street.
