BLENHEIM, dan 23
The Hon .1. G. Coates. Minister of Public Works .arrived here yesterday morning from Wellington, and. having been accorded a civic welcome, received a number of deputations, one of which represented the South Island Main Trunk Railway League. The Minister said that he had come across to make a. personal investigation of the railway problem. He would go carefully over the ground. At present he favoured the inland route, as he believed that it would open up a greater extent of of country than the const line, and, again the coast route was regarded as unsound from a defence point oi view. However, lie would go into the whole question on the ground with an open mind. Another matter urged on the Minister was the need for the bridging of the Tvekerangu river ,and generally the improvement of the road line, of communication between Blenheim, Kaikoura, and Christchurch, so that it might he rendered reliable at all times for the travelling public and the settlers along the route. The Minister replied in sympathetic terms. Mr Coates, who has brought his own car across, set out to inspect the country in the direction of Topliouse and Tarndale.
