AUSTRALIAN AND N.Z. CABLE ASSOCIATION. (Received this day at 8 a.m.) SYDNEY, January it. In the singles, Johnston defeated O'Hara Wood 6-2, 11-9. Heath defeated Washburn 6-2, 6-4. In the Doubles, Brookes and 0 Hunt Wood defeated Tilden and Johnston 6-3, 8-6, 4-6, 7-5. The grand totals wore—America, seven matches, 17 sols, 146 games; Australia, two matches, seven .slots, 120 games. Over two thousand attended the third day’s tennis at Double Bay. The weather was fine and hot.
Johnston and O’Hara AYoocl opened the programme. The second set proved a line contest both players racing neck and nock and were four all, Johnsln winning at 11-9. After one deuce Heath easily accounted for Washburn who played in lieu of Tihlcn.
The doubles promised to be classic and the promise was fully redeemed. Brookes undeterred by his opponents vitality, pitted strategy against speed to such purpose that lie won the tOst set tit 6-3, ably assisted by his partner, his net play living of the highest class. In the succeeding set, Brookes nlay was a masterpiece. The Americans gained a lead at the eleventh game but- Australia won the next three and the set. The visitors opened the third set winning two games to love, per medium of Tilden’s terrific service, and Johnston’s cross court drive, but the Australians d*ew level on the sixth game, mainly due to Brookes’ superior court generalship The visitors won at 6-4. A volleying duel between Wood and the Americans marked the opening of the fourth set, AVood brilliantly smashing into the stand. It was level pegging at the 10th game and brilliant work bv, the Australians gave them the next two games and the rubber.
