There will be a record number of cases set down for hearing at the sitting of the Magistrate’s Court at Hokitika on Thursday next. There are ovei 50 charges of failure to stamp documents under the Stamp Duty Act, Licensing Act charges, assault, maintenance applications and others.
The police reported yesterday that Alary O’Connor, aged about 50, hud died suddenly that morning at Waiho Gorge. Heart disease was the suggested cause of death, the deceased having been a patient recently of a Christchurch doctor for heart trouble. An inquest will be held at Waiho to-day.
A correspondent supplies the following interesting comparisons of weather records gleaned from the Gazette as affecting Wellington and Hokitika during the month of November. At Wellington rain fell on 15 days, the total amount being 2.70 inches, while at Hokitika, rain fell on ‘iorttlnys, 17.17 indies falling. At Wellington there were 5 sunless days, and 160 hours 34 minutes of sunshine, while at Hokitika in spite of‘2s days of rain there were only 7 sunless days and there were 154 i-iours 6 minutes of sunshine. The rainfall at Gore for that month was 6.14 inches of rain .falling on 25 days, while at Napier there wore only 4 days of rain which totalled .58 inches.

The, Secretary of St. John Ambulance desires to acknowledge receipt of a donation of £2 2s from the Westland Racing Club. 1 The Wahine connection at Christchurch this morning with the overland express was a very close one, and one bag of mails from Wellington for Hokitika missed the connection. ' At the Magistrate’s Court Greymouth j yesterday, Charles Quavtermain on a charge of a breach of a prohibition j order and with molesting his wife, who has a separation order against him, was given a final chance by the Magistrate being convicted and discharged.

The visit of Pollard’s Greymouth Orchestra to Hokitika last evening, attracted a very large audience to the pictures. The splendid musical programme given under the baton of Mr Hawkins, was thoroughly enjoyed by the large audience, the star picture also being an excellent presentation.
Mr J. Sullivan who has been for a long time connected with the management of Pollard’s Pictures, leaves shortly for India under engagement to Mr Edgar Warwick, the well and popularly known theatrical entrepreneur. Mr Sullivan lias had considerable theatrical experience in India.
Air George Nohra died at the Greymouth Hospital last evening, after one week’s illness. He leaves a wife and children, the eldest 4 years and the youngest 1 year of age. Mr Nohra was a resident of the Grey district for fourteen and a half years. He was only 30 years of age.
The death of Airs W. J. Holder occurred at her residence, 19 Heads Road, Wanganui, on Tuesday, after a long illness. Mr and .Mrs Holder and their three daughters left Greymouth for Wanganui about three years ago. The deceased has been a great sufferer, and her end was not altogether unexpected. 'She was a most kind hearted woman, and a model mother.
A very painful accident befol the infant daughter of Air F. AVilliams, Mayor of Brunner, yesterday. It appears that the little girl, who is only six teen months old, was playing on the floor with her brother, a boy about four years. Airs AVilliams bad filled a jug of hot water from the kettle, and placed it on the table. She was absent a few seconds during which the little mite pulled the jug over on herself, scalding liorself on the chin, ‘throat, chest and arms. Kind neighbours soon offered their assistance and the little one is doing as well as can be expect’d
A fatal accident occurred at Speight, Pearce, Nicholl, and Davy’s, Ltd. timber works at Cambridge on Tuesday morning. A man named H. Boulton, who was employed as bead breast henchman, was sawing timber on the breast bench, when it appears the timber slipped, and the Saw somehow caught it, dragging it along and striking Boulton in the chest. He fell backwards and struck his head on a rail. Death was instantaneous. The unfortunate man leaves a wife and daughter.
Exclusive of troops of the Expeditionary Force, the number of immigrants arriving in New Zealand in the first eleven months of 1920 was: —Males 21,907, females 18,771; total 40,678, of whom 3,729 were assisted immigrants. In the same period the number of "emigrants was :—.Males 16,264, females 13,696; total 30,960. The excess of arrivals over departures for the eleven months was thus 9,718. For the corresponding period of 1919 the total number of immigrants was 17,406, and the total number of emigrants 17,435, an excess of arrivals over departures of 31 only.
