GREYMOUTH RAILWAYMEN. GRKYMOUTH, January 24. At a meeting of the Grey Branch of the A.S.R.S., yesterday, a resolution was carried urging the forthcoming conference to request the Department to make the necessary arrangements to enable the railwayman to have a special picnic train on a Sunday, to l>e decided upon by the men, and failing a satisfactory reply the A.S.R.S. to take one working day off annually for the purpose of holding a- picnic : in the same way as workers employed | in other industries. j It was explained that railwaymeu ’ could not, owing to the nature of their ! employment meet to-gether for a weekday's enjoyment. Repeated requests had been made for a Sunday train, so i as not to hold up the service, but the Department had not soon its way to grant the. requests. | Tiie railwaymeu do not wish to be put off any further, and seeing the requests for Sunday trains have failed, they • now desire a day off on somo other day.

HI Ft BLACKBALL DISPUTE.

A CONFERENCE LIKELY. WELLINGTON, January 22. Regarding tho trouble at the Blackball mine and the “go-slow” policy now being put into operation in the mines, it is understood that the present position is that the minors and mine owners are both disposed to accept the Prime Minister’s suggestion that the matter in dispute should be referred to a committee of parties with an independent chairman. Each side, however, makes conditions. One oi these concerns the selection of a chairinan. Further negotiations will Ik* necessary before the proposed method of settlement is agreed upon.

RAILWAY FATALITY AT HUNTLY. AUCKLAND, Jan 23. An accident with fatal consequences occurred at the Huntly Railway Grossing, when James Hamilton was run down by the Main Trunk express from Wellington. The express was promptly pulled up and Dr Cuthbert ot Huntly was called in. Hamilton Was unconscious having sustained a severe gash on his head. His left leg was completely severed by tho engine while the left arm wars badly crushed and broken. Arrangements were made by the Railway Department to have the ambulance in waiting when the express should arrive at Auckland and the injured limn was taken up to tho Auckland Hospital. Twenty minutes after his admission lie succumbed to bis injuries. Deceased wss a single man, 24 years ol age, and resided with Ids parents at

Hakanoa Road, Huntly. He was a blacksmith by trade. N.Z. EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTE. WELLINGTON, Jan 23. At the annual meeting of the New Zealand institute regulation were approved for the Hamilton memorial prize in commemoration of the work of the late Augusta* Hamilton. The prize is a triennial one for encouragement to beginners in scientific research. The Hector Medal was awarded to N. Speight for work in geology.
