STEWARDS’ STRIKE
OWNERS ADAMANT. BY TELEGRAPH—PRESS ASSN., COPYRIGHT, AUSTRALIAN AND N.Z. CABLE ASSOCIATION. SYDNEY. January 19. As a result' of the. strike 76 vessels are' laid up in the Commonwealth, rendering idle between 6even and eight thousand men. The Australian owners state that early in the dispute the London directors, who control the biggest part of the ships, intimated * hat they had made up their minds that this is.to be the last of shipping industrial troubles in Australia, and as the Australian owners had, decided to make a final stand to secure the peaceful working of vessels which were laid up a, conference with the stewards was refused. 1 ”

It is reported that secret negotia--tions are in progress for the settlement of the stewards’ strike, and that the Federal Minister has been in communication with both sides for the last few days. MANUKA’S STEWARDS SIGN OFT. CHRISTCHURCH, January 19 When the Manuka arrived at Ljttelton this morning from Sydney, via' Wellington, her stewards all gave 24 hours’ notice. The vessel sails this evening for Wellington, where the stewards will le.i.e her. The men are on New Zealand and Inter-colonial articles, and are quite within their rights in giving notice. They did not join in the cause with the Australian stewards when the Manuka was in Sydney recently, but though no explanation of their actieti is available, it is likely that they me unwilling to cross the Tasman Sea again while the Australian strike is in pi tigress. the PAKEHA’S stewards. ‘lt . ' ■ ! . t : * CHRISTCHURCH, January 19. The Homo liner Pakelia signed off 31 stewards to-day, the men having been engngecl only as far as Lyttelton. When the Pakelia was signing on stewards at Home, there were hundreds of applications. Some of the Pakelia’s men today signed on the Manuka,’ hut it is stated that they were not aware that j the Ma’huku’s stewards had given notice wlidri 1 they signed on. They will have to make the round trip before they can sign off.
