PROGRESS LEAGUE

WESTLAND BRANCH

TUESDAY, JAN. 18,

The monthly meeting of the Westland Branch ,was held at the County {Chambers at 7.50 p.m. Present: —Messrs R. Wild (Chairman), J. Ritchie, Logue, t'artey, F. R'. Stewart, Evans, and Pilkington. The minutes of the previous meeting were confirmed, and the outward correspondence approved. A letter was received apologising for the absence of Mr W. J. Jeffries, absent in Christchurch, also from- Mr Butler, absent in Wellington.—Approved.

.Mr Ritchie moved a motion congratulating Government on the amount of money provided for South Westland as far south as Oku.ru, and asking that an engineer lie sent to report on ways and means for carrying out the expenditure as rapidly as possible; the Member for Westland to be asked to support the proposal to expedite the expenditure of the votes appropriated by Parliament. The motion was* favourably discussed and carried unanimously. A discussion ensued on the South Westland bridges, and .satisfaction was expressed at the action of the Public Works Department in proceeding with several new works.

The finances- of the Branch were discussed and it was resolved to write to various bodies regarding financial assistance.

The question of the weekly half-holi-day was brought up in regard to the suggested proposal to change from Wednesday to Saturday. The feeling of the meeting was against such n change, it being stated that in view of tire number of country people who used the present suitable Saturday train time-table, the alteration would not he -to the benefit of local trading. A motion to this effect was adopted, and ordered to he sent to the Traders Protection Association for consideration. The matter of the want of public conveniences about the town was referred to it being remarked .upon during the holidays by visitors. A deputation consisting of Messrs Wild and Logue was appointed to wait on the Borough Council and urge attention to the mattei*. The meeting conciliated at 9 p.m.
