Received this day at 2.36 p.m * LONDON, January 17 The whole of England is breathlessly watching the progress of the test, with an intensity of interest probably never exceeded in the whole series of historic contests. The incessant question in the trains, busses and trams is “Wb.it is latest score”, England’s gallant halting is arousing enthusiasm. “The best, news yet”, is the general comment, and the belief is spreading that the position of retaining the ashes is not yet irretrievable.
Wilson cables that England is playing the Australian bowling far better than over before. He pays a warm tribute to the Australians splendid fielding. CRICKET FIXTURES. In lieu of the Tasmanian fixtures the Englishmen will play matches at Hamilton on the 25th and 26th; at Stawell on 28th and 29th., and probably at Maryborough on February Ist and 2nd.
