STRIKE BALLOT

The Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants have decided to take a ballot on the question of striking in the event of non-payment to members of the Society, of the cost of living bonus recently granted unions by the Aihitiation Court. TIMARU, Jan 14

A shocking fatal accident occurred at Pareorn railway station this evening. When the evening slow train going south was at the station, a man left it temporarily and tried to get on hoard again after it had started.. He missed his footing and fell between the two carriages, and both legs were shockingly mutilated. An engine and van were sent from Timaru to bring the injured man to town, but he died just before lie was put in the van. He was only able to give his name ‘ Rennie,’' ami “Wingatui.”. At the Magistrates Court, a watorsider named John Asher was sent to gaol for one month for the theft of a bottle of wine, from the liokl of a steam-

Leonard Rushell and Charles ( harlwood were each fined £25 for slv-grug selling. K. Keegan, P. E. Symons, and J. 11, Fairman, visitors to the premises were each fined 10a.

HOSPITAL COMMISSION

WELLINGTON, Jan. 14

It, was announced last session that the Minister for Health (Hon (’. J. Parr) would have an investigation made of the question of hospital subsidies anil general hospital management. The Minister says that the personnel of the Commission lias been decided, upon and the names of the five gentlemen chosen would shortly he gazetted. Toe Commission will probably commence its work, which will take about a fortnight, in Wellington next month. The Commission will not visit other parts of New Zealand.
