John Lee, at the age of 23, whilst in the employ of Miss Emma Keyse at one time a Maid-of-Honour to Queen Vievtoria, was accused and found guilty on circumstantial evidence of murdering his mistress. He was sen toneecl to death in 1814. Three times they tried to hang him, and three times the v failed. His sentence was then com muted to penal servitude for life.
