A fire destroyed the Economic Stores, one of the chief drapery businesses, and a chemist’s shop, and an adjoining cafe was alfeo sevefraly damaged. At one time the fire threatened to destroy the whole block, which is in the heart of the city. The damage is estimated at a hundred thousand. AUSTRALIAN STEWARDS’ STRIKE. SYDNEY, January 12. ’The stewards on the Makura have given twenty-four hours’ notice. When it expires the company states they will put the vessel out of commission. \ RETRENCHING STAFFS. The writ is nailed to the mast in accordance with the usual custom. DEEPENING THE HARBOR. SYDNEY, Jan. 14 The entrance to Newcastle harbour is to he deepened several feet. Rock drilling plant will commence work on Saturday. The Navigation Office warns mariners to exercise care when passing. BOWLERS TOUR. SYDNEY, Jan. 14 The New South Wales team of bowlers who proposed sailing for New Zealand yesterday, have abandoned the trip through tlie strike and have undertaken a tour of the south coast instead.

The Science Congress considered Knibb’s paper on the science of statistics in respect to finance, commerce, industry, population and foodstuffs for the purpose of comparing the economic drift of national world economics. Doctor Park on the health of the nation, urged a Commonwealth campaign towards ‘the elimination of factories affecting health, revealed hv the number of rejects during the war.

The Federal Executive of the Labour Party is convening a conference of unions in Melbourne in June, to piepnrq ways and means to advance the interests of the masses, probably by socialisation of industry.
