A FRIAR’S TRIAL
SHOCKING DISCLOSURES. [by TELEGRAPH—PER PRESS ASSOCIATION] AUSTRALIAN AND N.Z. CABLE ASSOCIATION. (Received This Day at 9.45 a.m.) LONDON, Jan. 3. The “Chronicle’s” Milan correspondent states there was special intense ekcitement during the five week’s trial just concluded of an apostate priest, Friar Ciaolino, a leading Franciscan preacher, who was sentenced to twentyfour years’ imprisonment on a charge of murdering his superior. A crowded court daily heard amazing stories of the Friar’s criminal love affairs, covering the ten year ruin of 32 families attributed to him. A thousand love letters from accused’s admirers including a Countess. He had a long association with actresses and houses of ill-fame and gambling, and culminated in the murdering of his superior with an iron bar. He immediately went to his mistress’ house and donned woman’s stage clothes, arid he bade all eat, drink and be merry. Accused admitted that he; had lost his belief in religion soon after he took the vows, but continued for the sake of the fees and the facilities for conquest.
