Tlie Hokitika schools excursion has been fixed for Wednesday, Jan. JL9tli, at Lake Muliinapua. A canvass for funds will lie made in tlie course of- a few days. The planet Mercury, which sets on .January Ist., at 7 p.m., will be in conjunction with the sun on January 17th., and will he visible in the eastern sky towards the end of the month. Venus sets on January Ist., at 10.4 p.m., and on January 15th at 9.44 p.m; it is increasing in brightness and during the month its apparent magnitude will change from 3.7 to 4.0.. Mars sets on January Ist at 10.9 p.m. and on January 36tli at 0.38 p.m. Jupiter rises on January Ist at 10.57 p.m., and on January 15th at 10.2 p.m., while Saturn rises on these dates at 11.14 p.m. and 10.20 p.m. respectively.
