OBITUARY

JOSEPH ADAMS. The unexpected death of an old and esteemed resident of Humphreys took place on Friday afternoon last, when Mr Joseph Adams passed away suddenly, front heart failure. Deceased was a native of Lowestoft, England, and 85 years of age, and for sixty years a resident of New Zealand. He leaves a widow, four sons, and a daughter, (Mrs Dyer of Christchurch). The funeral took plaeo to Hokitika cemetery on Sunday afternoon, tho Rev. Purchas conducting the services at All Saints’ Church and tho graveside. ISABEL ADAMS.

The death took place at AA T estland Hos pital on Christmas Day of Isabel Margaret, the 13-year old daughter of Hr AVilliani Adams, of Humphreys, and a grand daughter of Air Joseph Adams who passed away two days before. 'I he young girl, who was of a bright disposition, had gained her proficiency certificate at the recent examination. She had suffered for some few days. Her death will be a sad loss to her parents and relatives. The funeral took place yesterday morning, the Rev Dr. Holloway conducting the service.

CHARLES KIRK. The death took place at Westland Hospital on Christmas Day, ol' Mr Charles Kirk, a son of the late Mr Kirk one time Borough Inspector. Deceased was a single man, a native of Canada, and 68 years of age. HENRY SMITH. We have to record the death of an old and esteemed resident of the town, in tho person of Mr Hcnrv Smith, of Stafford Street, who passed away yesterday after a long and lingering illness. The deceased ,who was a native of Yell, Shet land was 78 years of age. For many years Mr Smith was telegraph lineman in Hokitika until he retired on superannuation some years ago ; since alien his health had gradually failed. Deceased leaves a widow and family of four, one son (Stanley), and threedaughters, (Mrs A. Dunford of Greymouth, Mrs Alexander, and Mrs Eisfelder, both of Wellington). Many old friends will extend their deep sympathy to the bereaved. WILLIAM HANNAM. The death took place on r Xmas Eve at Wellington of Mr Will. Hannam, a sterling West Coast pioneer, who for very many years, was-in. business at Hokitika as a butcher. Having seen active service in the British Army at tile Crimean War, deceased was one of the earliest arrivals at Hokitika in 1865, being also one of the first men to cross the Hokitika bar in a ship. He continued in business here for about half a century, and bv his genial character and business ability gained the esteem of a wide circle of friends. I Several years ago he retired, and went to live with his relatives at Wellington. He was close on ninety years of age. He leaves three sons and two daughters, the latter residing in Wellington. The sons are Messrs Win. Hannam (Greymouth), Tom Hannam (Wellington) and Charles Hannam (IVtoiie). The bereaved relatives will have the sympathy of many friends in their loss.

MRS CONNOR. A deep feeling of sorrow was expressed yesterday when it became known that Mrs Connor, wife of Mr William Connor, of the Hokitika abattoir had passed away early in the morning. The deceased had been in a critical condition for some days past and it was known there was only a slender hope of tier recovery. Of a. bright, lovable nature, Mrs Connor won hosts of friends wherever she went. She was of a generous nature and gave freely of her best in all. public matters ,especially in connection with war benefits and public institutions, being one of that happy hand of willing lady helpers to whom the town is so deeply indebted. Deceased was a native of Ross, a daughter of Mr W. Clarke of lfoss. She leaves a. husband two young sons, father, sister (Mrs McPherson of Greymouth). two brothers, (Mr John Clarke of Greymouth, and Mr W. Clarke of Ross), and several aunts, including Miss N. Jonas of Hokitika. Hosts of friends will, extend their sympathy to the bereaved in their sad loss.
