BEDROOM FIND

An interesting history attaches to the eight pieces of early English tapestry catalogued for sale next month by Messrs Sothetiy, Wilkinson, and Hodge.

The tapestries are the property of Airs Whitmore Jones, of Chastelton House Moreton-in-tlie-Marsh, Gloucestershire, and were recently found packed away in the bedroom occupied by the butler. .It is said that they were thought to have, been lost. An expert on tapestry said: “If the pieces are in good order and the bidding is anything like as keen as the demand for good tapestry, they ought to fetch anything from £50,000 to £IOO,000.”

They bear the date of 1595, and are claimed to bo the most important works from the Sheldon Looms founded by Sheldon in themiddle of the sixteenth century which have ever come into the market. The best-known panels are the huge maps in the AGctoria and Albert Museums, panels with figures and verdures being rare. A skt of four is offered for sale. Each panel has a scene from the life of Judah in the centre, surrounded by a scroll design, the ground work beyond being covered with beautifully drawn and coloured English flowers.

Another panel has a central group of figures, and the inscriptions rend: “AVhen Parese gave tho. golden appel” and “Ovid, 9th Chap.” Round l this picture of the Judgment of Paris are floral designs. These 'five vary from seven to twelve feet square.

One small piece of Sheldon tapestry recently sold in London fetched over £2,000.'
