YACHT RACING

governor-general PARTICIPATES.

AUCKLAND, December 20.

More than usual interest was taken in the Nortli Shore Yacht Club’s race for the 14ft. one design class, on Saturday, otving to tho fact that the Go- ! vcrnor-Goneral, Lord Jellicoe, was to bo seen at the helm of his new boat, the Iron Duke. As his Excellency was sailing his first race in the Dominion, a very large minuter of yachting enthusiasts and the general public gathered on the King's Wharf to witness tlio race, while a number of yachts and launches followed the boats round the corpse. Tho rnfce was sailed in the harbour, and brought out ten starters, all of wliick finished except one. The wind, was very light when they started, and, keeping rather too far away from the starting line which was off the end of the King’s wharf, the Iron Duke was unable to reach the lino in time, with a result that she got a had start, being the last boat hut one to cross. Shortly after the start a nice northerly breeze sprang up and the Iron Duke at once, began to overhaul her opponents. One by one she beaded them, and when the first mark was reached -she had sailed into fifth position. The beat across to the sandsuit beacon enabled lior to close up, on the leaders —Ola, Idler, Edna and Kewpie—but she was unable to ■ahead them. After rounding the beacon, however the Iron Duke replaced both Edna and Kewpie, but before the first round was completed she. was again overtaken by ICewpie, In the second round Iron Duke maintained her position finishing fourth after a most excitingrace with Kewpie. Tire performance 3*. i™ h » Wyf one, especially as the type of boat is new to bis Excellency, and also that be is not yet accustomed to the haibour currents. Among the boats that were beatfn.by the Iron Duke wasUhe Meteor, winner of the race, for - designers held, recently bv the Loyal New Zealand Yacht Squadron.
