“I hope you will remember the traditions which have been' put into your minds while you are at sohool,” said tlie Governor-General to the Auckland Grammar School lads. “It is the opportunity of carrying on the traditions of any great establishment such as this which leads boys as they become men to determine that nothing they will ever do will sully the reputation of the school from which they came. It is these traditions which have made the English public schoolboys what they are. It is the same spirit which will make tli? New Zealand schoolboy proud of his sohool and of the reputation of his school, and proud Of the Empire. And so long as there is esprit do corps among the men and boys, so long will the British Empire continue to be a pattern to all tho other nations of the world.”
An amusing point arose in tho Christchurch Police Court, when the hearing of tho alleged case of pocket-picking was almost concluded. Mr W. It. Don, from whoso hip pocket a. purse containing L3O was taken, was recalled and produced the purse which still contained some money. It was pointed out that if the purse wore put in evidence, the money would have to remain in it, and the money would have to remain in the custody of the Court till the February. sessions of the Supremo Court. Mr Don expressed his willingness to agree to this, the Magistrate remarking that he was a lucky man to he able to do without the use of his purse, and money for the period mentioned. Ultimately, .however,, a compromise was nrriver at, accused’s counsel, Mr F. D. Sargent, agreeing after he had pencilled a mark on the purse to take the “production” of tlie purse for granted.
