(Reuter’s Telegram.) TERRIBLE CATASTROPHE. APPALLING DEATH ROLL. BUENOS AYRES, Dec. 20. There # havo been terrific earthquake shocks, which have destroyed many towns along the Argentine slopes of the Andes Mountains. Over a hundred and fifty bodies have been recovered so far, but the death roll is expected to be appallingly high. A hundred people perished at Tresportenns, and thirty at Costa De Arauja. Not .a house is left standing in La Valle and La Central. Particularly strong shocks were felt again on Saturday in the towns of San Martin and Riradnvia and the city of Mendoza was badly shaken, but was undamaged. This is the worst catastrophe since 1869. AMERICAN TARIFF REFORM. WASHINGTON, Dec 20. Tho Ways and Means Committee of Congress has agreed to new protective tariff rates, which are to be embodied in a Bill to bo presented to Congress on Tuesday: Thirty cents a bushel on wheat; 15 cents per pound on wool in grease; 20 cents per lb skirted; 2J cents per lb on mutton and lamb; ©0 per cent .ad valorem on cattle; 20 per cent ad valorem on flour; 15 cents per bushel on corn; a dollar per head on sheep under one year old, and cents, per gallon on soy bean oil.
