They should have sailed last Thursday. STB IKE EXTENDI NG. •SYDNEY, Dec. 20. The stewards’ strike is becoming more serious. The owners are employing a strike-breaking crew on the steamer Marelln. It is now expected the strike will spread to the wharf'labourers. The strike has also spread to the inter-State cargo carriers. , The stewards on two vessels at Newcastle are giving notice. The Union Company is racing against time with the Moeraki, which is due tonight. If the vessel arrives in time, there is a good chance of despatching
her to Tasmania before the stewards’ notice expires. N.Z. CUT OFF. (Received This Day at 10.40 a.m.) SYDNEY, December 21. Stewards on the Riverina intend enderuig notices on 1 Wednesday which completely cuts off communication with New Zealand. Many New Zealanders are stranded. THE UNION’S VIEW. . SYDNEY, December 21. Monte, the Stewards’Secretary replying to Justice Higgins, states the latter is only heaping coal of fire to widen the breach. He recently suggested the Union should take a plebiscite to ascertain whether the members be allowed to settle their dispute or not. It is understood that as an outcome of the strike, owners will endeavvour to abolish tipping.
SHIPOWNERS REFUSAL. MELBOURNE, December 21. Shipowners have sent a communication to Mr Hughes rejecting, the offer of the Tasmanian Government on the grounds that it would only tend to perpetrate the trouble.
