LONDON, Dec s l6. A correspondent at Cork states the great stumbling block to the military inquiry which is opening on Saturday, is the difficulty of getting civilian witnesses to come forward, owng to intimidation and suspicion. Ireland is a kind of whispering gallery and Cork one of its most secret corners. It is a city with fingers to the lip. People among themselves tell moving stories in confidence, which are immadately broken at the approach of a stranger.
HOME RULE BILL.
LONDON, Dec. 17
The House of Commons debated the amendments to the Home Rule Bill made by the House of Lords and accepted the establishment of senates and the constitution of the southern Senate, making it pre-eminently non-represen-tative, but rejected the extension of three to six years during which the Irish Parliament must not revise the electoral system. > Sir Eduard Citrson supported the sixyear period, saying that proportional representation could not be fairly tested in three years. He added that it laid proved an absolute failure in Australia and New Zealand, where it brought about most unexpected results. The House of Commons also rejected the proposal that the establishment of the Irish legislatures should' be postponed until order bad been fully restored.
The “Daily News” says the political situation is grave and the fate of the Home' Rule Bill is uncertain, ft is thought that the House of Lords is not likely to give way in connexion with their amendments. Representatives of the Upper House and members of the Cabinet are in consultation, but thus far there is no prospect of a compromise. MURDER OF POLICE. LONDON, Dec. 17. Sinn Feiners ambushed eight police at Kilcoinmou, killed, four, and severely wounded one.
