U.S. CHAMPIGNE COMEDY.
NEW YORK, Oct. 14. The elforts of the". Public Ledger of Philadelphia to draw, the attention of tho Federal Prohibition Commissioners
to tho flagrant volation of the “dry” laws in the neighbouring city of New Pork appear to have borne some results. At any rate all Philaelphia is chuckling over the turn events have taken while certain New York'City officials are getting in each other’s way as they scurry to ; the newspaper, offices here with stories about the volume of prohibited beverages that flow in the Quaker City. ■ The incident began when the New York correspondent of the Philadelphia newspaper wrote a picturesque account of liquor violations in New York, in which it'was stated that, among other things, tho violations were occurring with the full knowledge of the police and city officials. Mr John F. Hylan, Mayor of New York, wrote an indignant letter to the Philadelphia Ledger denying the charges and demanding a retraction or the submission of proof. Proof was submitted the next day in tlie form of a blithe account of a season-ending party at the popular resort ,of Sheopshead Bay in which champagne corks-popped holes in the Prohibition Law. Mr Hylan, tho Prosecuting Attorney, of Brooklyn and several other high officials wore present. ■ -.-- ■ To-day Mr Hylan and the Prosecutor, Mr Lewis have been “invited” to appear before the Federal Prosecutor to. tell what they know about the affair.
