MR MILLEN’S CAMPAIGN.
(Received This Day at 10.40 a.m.) LONDON, Dec. 10. Percy Hunter, the Federal Immigration Agent, says Mr Mlllen’s remarkable fight at the League of Nations Congress in the course of economy is recognised by all the Powers at Geneva. He practically dominated the Finance ... Commission’s sittings for a fortnight. Mr Millen was insistent, generally, at the extravagant ilens of the establishment which should be remodelled. Though he was naturally faced with considerable opposition, from vested interests, he succeeded finally in securing sufficient support to ensure that future Budgets be rigorously economised. Mr Millen made a great fight against the establishment of several new costly independent commissions, and the Assembly adopted his view of altering the constitution of these bodies from permanent to merely temporary advisory committees. Mr Millen s efforts will result in the saving of hundreds of thousands yearly, without imparing the efficiency of the scheme to prevent war; and will also save Australia a. very big sum in contributions \ 'to the League. Australia is charged on the same rate as France and Britain. Although relief will not be immediate, it will be ultimately attained and made retrospective.
AMERICA AND THE LEAGUE.
(Received This Day at 10.40 a.m.) NEW YORK', Dee. 14. The “Herald” commenting on Mr Sheldon’s Boston speech (cabled on the 3rd) says this expression'of sympathy with Mr Lodge’s suggestion has made a pleasing impression on the Senate, and it would cause no surprise if Mr Harding found that some of the most ardent opponents of the League of Nations, or any association of nations, would look differently upon the arrangement with the British Dominions to protect their common interests.
AD STRIA ADMITTED. . (Received This Day at 10.40 a.m.) LONDON, Dec. 15 Austria'has been admitted to the League of Nations. *; Hon Mr Millen declined to vote either way.
