A Waitaha section that had been before tbe Westland Land Hoard on numerous occasions in the past, came up again yesterday afternoon, in an application for transfer. The Commissioner, in. moving that the application bo recommended stated that he was not satisfied even now, but the authorities do not seem prepared to take up his - suggestion of the Crown taking it hack foi° the value of the timber thereon. Personally he regarded the transfer as a timber one, though the applicant had agreed to go into permanent residence for fours years and complete the residence there. He did not see what other action the Board could take, and there-. ; fore moved for the recommendation of ' the transfer to the Department. This course was agreed to. : The Westland Land Board at its meet ing yesterday afternoon upheld the ruling, in force for many years past, that l owners of land fronting river beds, had ! the right to the lease o.f the river-beds . in front of their property. In the case ] in question, the objector had, some 1 three years ago, bought, with other I property, tli 0 rights.to the T.G.L. over • the' river-bed. Some time ago the ap- | plicant had bought an area alongside ! the river bed, and now approached the | Board for the right to the river bed I area. This was objected to' by th e pre,i sent holder, but the Board resolved to j uphold its former procedure and to cancel I the license at present held by the ob- , jeetor, covering the applicants’ frontage, and to grant it to the applicant, who owned the land fronting the river bed area. With a view to preventing more hardship than was necessary, the | Board decided to terminate the present, j lease on the 31st March, so as to enI able him to dispose of his sheep at pre- ! sent running on the river bed.

The concert in the Kanieri Public Hall, Kanieri last evening, was a huge success, the prize fund l>eing gieatly augmented as a result. The concert proved the most enjoyable witnessed in Kanieri for some time, showing great credit to Mrs Manson and her assistants Most of, the performers were encored. The National Anthem concluded a fine programme. The hall was then cleared and daneiug indulged in, the floor being crowded.
