LABOR DISPUTE. TIMARU, Dec. 11
The waterside workers ceased work this morning in consequence- of the refusal of the railway union to amalgamate. The Disputes Committee is_ nowsitting. Meanwhile work, is held up. The Te Anau is the only vessel in port.
As a result of a conference the watersiders agreed to resume work at 1 p.m. A conference will be held later to discuss the dispute. DAMAGES AGAINST .ORCHARD SUPERVISOR. NELSON, Dec. 10. After a sitting extending over seven days, the hearing of tho action Joseph Samuel Thompson, bank manager, Blenheim, v. Charles Edward Lowe, of Harakeke, orchard supervisor, in which a claim was made for damages for alleged neglect of plaintiff’s orchard, has partially concluded. The jury found a verdict for plaintiff for £450. The question of law as to whether the proper party had been sued is to be submitted to Mr Justice Hosking at Wellington.
GOVERNOR-GENERAL. AUCKLAND, Dec. 10 The Governor-General and Iris family arrived in Auckland this morning and they are now in residence at Government House for the summer. Lord Jellicoe has entered his new boat in a yacht race on the harbour to-morrow, and will sail it himself. CHILD KILLED BY MOTOR-CAR. DUNEDIN, Dec. 9. Arthur Gilderoy Barnes, aged eight years, was knocked down by a motor car at Green Island yesterday, and died in the hospital. At the inquest this morning, Charles Victor Marie Legall, electrical engineer employed at the Lake Coleridge power station, Canterbury, gave evidence that lie hired the car with the intention of going to -Brighton. He was accompanied by a young lady; Owing to the strong wind that was blowing it was decided when a few miles from Brighton t‘o turn back. He and his friend were sitting in the back seat. Just before the accident, he saw a child about a couple of yards in front of the car. child seemed to run from the lefthand side of the road and cross in front of the car, which was travelling at between ten and fifteen miles an hour. Witness did not consider that
there was any negligence on the part of the driver. The driver swerved instantly, and was going at a very reasonable speed. They stopped at Green Island on the way out. Witness had a small “shandy” at the hotel, and the lady a soft drink, but the driver took nothing. He was quite sober. Witness was also sober. There "as no drink of any kind in the car. The Coroner adjourned the inquest sine die, for further evidence.
