A case of robbery by confidence-men through the “gold for notes” trick was reported in Sydney last week. William Walker, a visitor from New Zealand, visited the Tourist Bureau in Martin place, and when lie came out was accosted by a m’an who undertook to get Walker’s New Zealand notes changed into gold. Walker handed £IOO in notes to the man, who walked away and was not seen again. On Nov. 23rd (says the Melbourne Argus) the Commonwealth director of navigation |(Captain Davis), who was in command of the Aurora at the time, was advised that the bottle had been picked up on tho AVest Coast of New Zealand. It was thrown overboard to the south of Capo Leeuwin,' about latitude 40deg. south, and in the intervening six years had drifted nearly 3000 miles to the eastward.

Wc regret to record the death :>f Mrs Mary O’Neil of Tetaho which took place this morning at 7.30 o’clock. The deceased who was a native of Tipperary, Ireland and 81 years of age, was an old and esteemed resident of the district. For'many years she resided in Ross with her husband who predeceased some ten years- ago. She leaves a- family of five, three daughters, (Mrs Hutchison of Wellington, and Miss Nellie and Mary O’Neil at Tetaho), and two sons the well -known settlers of Tetaho, Me*a*s John and Thomas, O’Neil. Mrs Hutchison travelled through from Wellington, arriving ,at Hokitika this morning, to bear, the sad news of her mother’s end. She went on by ear this afternoon. Tho funeral is taking place to Watnron cemetery to-morrow afternoon. The family will have the deep sympathy of a wide circle of friends in their bereavement.

Mr George Falla retired from the Railway Department recently, after 41 years’ service ,tho last six of which he spent as stationmaster at Auckland. Mr L. C. Hamannn, assistant traffic manager at Christchurch, and formerly clerk in the district traffic manager’s office at Auckland, presented Mr Falla, on behalf of the Auckland railway staff, with an oak writing desk, and with a rug for Mrs Falla. He mentioned Mr Falla’s valuable services to the department, and his courtesy to the railway staff and general public. Mr Falla entered the service in August, 1879, being stationed at Westport, and later at Greymouth. Ho opened the station at Hokitika about 1884, and subsequently served at Lyttelton, Palmerston North, Hawera, Masterton, and Invercargill, whence ho went to Auckland. He held positions as stationmaster for 21 years, and was in charge of the Aucklan station during the greater part of the war period.
