They kept quiet till identified, and they ' then arrested them, namely Alderman ■ Staines, Councillors Hawlor, Lynch I Brennan, Clark." In the House of Commons, Mr Bonar t Law said that no reply had yet been sent to Rev O’Flanagan who telegraphed asking Mr Lloyd George what would, be his first step towards peace, j. The Chief Secretary for Ireland (Sir Hamnr Greenwood), said: “There could be no substantial truce until the lead- ’ ers in the Irish Republican Army had . surrendered or were arrested.” (General cheers). II Mr Devlin then turned to the Ulster Unionists’ benches, and cried: “Shut f up, you dogs!” An uproar followed. s Sir H. Greenwood said: There was r no question of war against Ireland, but the Government was bound to take e action against extremists. ir SINN FEIN POLICY, it LONDON, Dec. 7. d The Sinn Fein authorities have isi- sued a statement in regard to the RevFather O’Flanagan’s recent telegram

to Mr Lloyd George, asking him what was his proposed first step towards peace. The statement points out that the telegram was purely Father O’Flanagan’s personal opinion, and had not the Sinn Fein Executive’s sanction. It adds that “all public, bodies would be well advised to steer clear of the snares of the British Government, until Dail Eireann (Sinn Fein' Parliament) has spoken."
