A Dunedin correspondent says recent, rise in wholesale prices of- -tobacco is not to be passed on to the public by tlie Dunedin tobacconists—not at any rate until present stocks are exhausted, which will bq a matter of two months at least. By that time it is possible—though perhaps not probable —in view of the operations in recent years of those big concerns controlling the output, that a fall in prices will take place.

A statement illustrative of tbe difficulties being encountered by the Postal Department in supplying the still pressing demand for telephonic connexions was made by the Postmaster-General, the Hon J. G. Coates, at Auckland. The Department, he stated, was faced with the erection of 1456 miles of pole line, and 10,068 miles of open aerial telephone wire. This did not include many miles of cable, carrying anything from 25 to 600 pairs of wires in each cable. In addition, 565 miles of main lines were in urgent need of repair.—lt would readily be seen that the increased cost of material affected the Department very substantially, apart from any difficulty experienced in obtaining delivery.
A case of interest to those holding trout-fishing licenses came before tho Magistrate’s Court at Wellington on Friday, states the “Dominion,” when Edward B. Gardiner was charged with failing to produce his fishing license when requested to do so by a rangei. The defendant was fishing the Hiitt River between Hay war* and Belmont with another man. A ranger came on the ;ene, and asked Gardiner to produce his license. Gardiner, it was stated, refused to do so, and told the ranger to bring a test case against him'. It was contended for the defendant that he was fishing for eels, and did not therefore need to produce a license. Furthermore, he thought fhe r/mger could not demand to see his license jlj/til he had a trout in his possession. Hr R. Cooke, who appeared for the Acclimatisation Society, said the defendant was under a misapprehension as to the interpretation of the regulations, and the society did not press for a heavy penalty. Gardiner was fined 40s and costs 435.

Saturday was a day of records at Forbury Park (says the “Otago Daily Times”). In the first place AVhispering AVillie’s time in the Forbury Cup Handicap, of two miles—4min 38sec—was a track record for trotting horses. Again, in the last race of the day, tbe Recovery Handicap, Marie Tempest’s time, 2min 15sec, was a record for the track. In the matter of attendance, the crowd present was the largest on .record, and it is understood that the gate receipts were about £l5O better than the previous record, thus showing the increasing popularity of the sport of trotting. Coming to the totalisator. the investments on Saturday were the largest ever put through the machine in one day at Forbury, and for tlie two days they also constituted a record for the club.
