WRECK OF THE FERRET

HISTORY

STEAMER’S REMARKABLE

SYDNEY, November 23

Tile history of the tiny steamer Ferret, which was wrecked on the South Australian coast the other day, is unusually interesting. She was built on the Clyde and commissioned to carry passengers across the Firth of Forth. But before this work was commenced she was chartered by a man who posed as a wealthy manufacturer, who was going on a pleasure cruise. He took her out into the Atlantic, altered her whole appearance, called her the India, and took her to Brazil. Here he bought a cargo of coffee, took it to Cape Town, and sold it at a. handsome profit. In the meantime a boat and some lifebuoys, winch had been purposely sent adrift when the vessel was stolen, were picked up, . near Gibraltar, .and the Ferret was advertised as missing.

In the meantime the “India” came east and south, from Cape Town and put into King George Sound, West Australia, for coal. Thenoe tlie adventurer brought her to Melbourne seeking a carrying job. Tins was in the “eighties.” A smart Victorian trooper who had seen and remembered an advertisement about the missing Ferret, got a shrew(3 eye on the “Insia.,° and he became highly suspicious when he found the name had been filed off the ship’s bell. Investigations were carefully. undertaken, nnd the whole case was complete when someone discovered “Ferret” on some ship’s papers where “India” should have been. The captain and his accomplices received terms of imprisonment, and Inc. Ferret regained her name and was soi l to an Australian company. She was a well-known member of the mosquito tramp fleet on the Australian coast for very many years.
