LICENSING ACT.

A young man charged with being on licensed premises (Club Hotel) during prohibited hours, pleaded not guilty, as he was there for business reasons. Defendant gave evidence, and was crossexamined by Sergt McCarthy at some length. The evidence of the employer was also heard. The Magistrate said he was not satisfied of the necessity for the man going into the hotel after hours, but in view of the statement of his employer that he had invited him in, he would make the fine £1 and costs 7s.

Seven offenders were charged with being on licensed premises Hotel) during prohibited hours, Nov. 20th. One appeared and pleaded guilty, and the others did not appear. Each were convicted and fined £2 and 7s costs each.

Margaret It. Henderson (Mr Wells), licensee of the Mahinapua Hotel, was charged with selling liquor during prohibited hours, Nov. 20th. Mr Wells pleaded guilty and asked for leniency in the penalty, stating that the licensee was going out of the hotel, the son taking charge. Convicted and fined £5 and costs 7s. Two other charges were withdrawn. CIVIL. W. McKay and Son v. E. J. Solomon claim £6 9s fid. Judgment by default with costs los. J. B. Douglas for -wine-maker’s license. —Adjourned.; •
